It has been a busy and meaningful month for students in Mrs. Dorman’s Cherokee Language class as they participated in both the JOM Cherokee Challenge Bowl competition and several activities in honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Four of Mrs. Dorman’s students — Ray Kingfisher, Kayleigh Scott, Aaliyah Kingfisher, and Isabella Parks — earned first place at the Cherokee Challenge Bowl. This competition tests students’ knowledge of Cherokee history, culture, and art. Their achievement reflects not only their understanding of Cherokee traditions but also their pride in preserving and sharing their heritage.

To further celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 13, students showcased their creativity and cultural pride by designing and displaying poster art throughout the high school campus. They also experienced a favorite traditional pastime — rounds of Cherokee marbles, a customary game that continues to connect generations.

Mrs. Dorman’s classroom continues to serve as a space where students learn the Cherokee language, explore its deep cultural roots, and celebrate the traditions that shape their identity.
