STUDENT MEDICATION PROTOCOL

Medication Administration - If possible, parents are advised to administer medication at home on a schedule other than school hours. If it is necessary that medication be given during the school day, compliance with the following instructions is required:

  1. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian of the child to provide and maintain any medication to be given at school.

  1. All medication must be hand delivered and checked in per policy to the nurse’s office by parent or guardian. Students are NOT allowed to bring in medication on their own.

  1. All medication taken at school must be kept in the nurse’s office regardless of the student’s age. This is for the safety of all students. Exceptions are made for emergency medications (such as inhalers, EpiPens, and insulin) see below for further information for self carry.

  1. The parent/guardian must sign a Medication Consent form for each prescription and non-prescription medication to be given at school, and be kept on file in the nurse’s office. A new form must be completed for each school year and for any change in dosage, time, medication or duration. Telephone permission will not be accepted.

  1. No prescription or non-prescription medication shall be administered unless consent forms have been completed. You can find these forms in the health office or on our PPS website.

  1. Prescription and non-prescription medications must be brought to the nurse's office by parent/guardian in its original container with the original label intact. Prescription medications will be given only if the student's name, physician’s name, name and dosage of medication is listed on the original label along with directions for administration. The child’s physician in writing must approve any dosage changes. Expired medications will not be administered. A record of medication administration will be kept on file in the nurse’s office. It is the students and parents responsibility to ensure compliance.

  1. Medications will NOT at any time be sent home with a student. A parent or guardian must pick up any remaining medications at the end of the school year or with a medication change. If medication is not picked up by the last day of school, it will be discarded per policy.

  1. Emergency medications: Inhalers, EpiPens and Insulin are allowed for self carry by a student AFTER the school receives the completed Medication Consent/Self-Carry Form, signed by the parent AND physician, stating that it is necessary for the medicine to remain with student and student has had proper training on how to self-administer if needed. Per state law, the parent/guardian must provide an emergency supply to keep in the nurse’s office should the student misplace or forget to bring their emergency medication.

  1. Over the Counter Medications including Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) are available upon request by students if parent permission was given on the Standing Order Guidelines for Non-prescription Medication form, which is to be completed during the enrollment/registration process.

  • Standing Medical Orders are signed annually by consulting physician.
  • Consent to revoke Standing Medical Orders may be given at any time with written notice from the parent or guardian.
  • Parents acknowledge that Pryor Public Schools and its employees shall incur no liability as a result of any injury arising from the employee administration of medications related to a “yes” e-signature on the annual enrollment form.
  • Standing Medical Orders will be utilized only as related to the specific medical condition outlined on the order guideline document and per nursing policy and procedure.
